Update, May 27, 2025:
Great Parks reopened Winton Lake to all of its usual recreational activities on May 25. The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati stopped the sewage discharge and took additional water samples to test for E. coli bacteria. Hamilton County Public Health, Great Parks and MSD collectively reviewed sampling results and determined that the lake was safe for recreational activities.
“With E. coli results being below both the Ohio Bathing Water standards and U.S. E.P.A. recreational standards, the HCPH recommendation to limit recreational activity at Winton Lake is lifted,” Greg Kesterman, health commissioner for HCPH, said on May 25. “It is OK to boat, fish and recreate at the lake. We still recommend good hand hygiene after water recreation.”
Previous story, May 20, 2025:
The safety and health of Hamilton County residents and visitors is a top priority, and HCPH is in contact with Great Parks of Hamilton County and Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati about the situation. The sewage discharge was observed on the northern side of the lake near the Winton Woods campground, located at 651 Lakeview Drive.
HCPH was notified about the situation on May 19, and the agency’s environmental health specialists are actively investigating. MSD is taking water samples from the lake and expects results soon.
Park visitors should exercise caution during this time to prevent potential health issues, as exposure to sewage may cause illness. HCPH recommends the following safety tips:
-Do not let children or pets play near the affected area.
-Avoid letting bare skin come into contact with lake water.
-Wash hands, clothing and footwear thoroughly after being in the area.
