Hot weather frequently leads to heavy rains and thunderstorms. Here in Hamilton County and the surrounding areas, this precipitation can bring an increase in indoor water damage as well as flooding in low-lying and flood-prone neighborhoods.
If your home or business is affected by water, it’s important to take steps to protect your health and safety during clean-up. When rainwater makes its way indoors, it can introduce serious hazards like mold growth or structural damage, and flooding can cause sewer backups and bring contaminated water that may contain harmful bacteria, viruses, fecal material and other disease-causing organisms.
Hamilton County Public Health has created a helpful fact sheet with essential safety tips for cleaning up during heavy rains. Here’s what to know about mold, water damage and flood clean-up:
Wash your hands frequently when working in contaminated areas or cleaning affected items.
Wear rubber boots and gloves to protect yourself during cleanup.
Ventilate your home by opening windows and using fans to speed up drying and prevent mold growth.
Keep children and pets away from areas contaminated by floodwaters or sewage.
Throw away any food exposed to floodwaters, including refrigerated and frozen items that have come into contact with the water.
Discard thawed or spoiled foods, including milk, cheese and bulging or leaking canned goods.
Disinfect or dispose of toys, clothing and other items that have been contaminated.
